Exclusively at the Parallèle: Aisheen (Still Alive in Gaza)

Starts April 22

After studying film in Montreal, Nicolas Wadimoff (born in 1964 in Switzerland) directed his first feature length film, Clandestins, in 1996 with Denis Chouinard. 13 years later, after the Gaza War, he shot the documentary film Aisheen, Still Alive in Gaza. Lauded at the last Berlinale, and featured in competition at Hot Docs and Visions du Réel, the film is playing exclusively at the Cinéma Parallèle.

In Arabic, Aisheen signifies still alive. But, how does one go about living their lives in Palestine? This is the question that concerns the director.

In other words, Wadimoff is not looking to explain why the war happened. Indeed, he avoids any voice over, graphic imagery, re-enactment or personal intervention. With the day-to-day lives of the people living in Gaza as his only focus, he uses his camera to capture moments that are sometimes absurd, sometimes moving, often the both at once.

What results is a film marked by humanity, an impressionistic film gleaned from a hidden reality.
