Seed of excellence

Les Herbes folles starts playing July 16

Who was awarded Jury’s Special Prize for the whole of his cinematic career at Cannes in 2009? Alain Resnais, that’s who.

The director of Hiroshima mon amour, Coeurs, Mélo, Smoking, No Smoking, On connaît la chanson and Pas sur la bouche, has elevated himself to the rank of giant in the French film universe.

The Globe and Mail’s Jennie Punter notes that, with his latest work, the "revered French director Alain Resnais, now nearing 90, proves he still has spring in his step".

V.A. Musetto of the New York Post agrees: "If you were to see the new French film “Wild Grass” without knowing who the director is, you might conclude that it is the work of a young, cutting-edge filmmaker." He adds: "“Wild Grass” is a French movie for people afraid of French movies".

The last words go to Peter Howell of the Toronto Star: "Are we supposed to laugh? Oui, bien sûr! I certainly did".

Come see the master’s masterpiece...
